Sunday Morning Weather Update

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Sunday, March 20- Scattered Showers & Storms – High 46˚ / Tonight – Clouds Gradually Clearing – Low 32˚

Good morning, Bowling Green, and happy first day of (astronomical) spring! Now, today is different than the first day of meteorological spring that we celebrated on March 1st. Instead of the season being based on annual temperature cycles, astronomical spring is based on the Earth’s tilt in relation to its orbit around the sun.

The good news – Hours of daylight will continue to increase after the equinox (today!).
The bad news – Today does not look like a very pleasant first day of spring.

The weather conditions truly felt like spring – and somewhat summer! – earlier this week. Today, however, rain and cooler-than-average temperatures will make for a pretty “blah” Sunday.

Currently, an upper-level low over northern Missouri is gradually churning its way southeasterly. What does that mean here at the surface? Rain bands will appear stationary as they slowly rotate on an axis from a NW-SE orientation to a W-E orientation.

Scattered shower and storm chances will continue for the majority of the day, with the possibility of some hail or ice pellets falling in these storms! If this does occur, it will be due to the presence of instability and low freezing levels in the atmosphere.

Clouds will gradually clear overnight as the upper-level low and associated rainfall move out of the region. Temperatures will drop to right around the freezing level – Brrrr – so dress warm if you’re heading out!

Monday, March 21 – Mostly Sunny – High 53˚ / Monday Night – Mostly Clear – Low 35˚

Weather conditions will start looking up beginning Monday. An upper-level trough will continue to move eastward, allowing for a slight ridge to more zonal flow to fall in behind it.

High pressure at the surface will keep us dry on Monday, under mostly sunny skies. West-northwest winds will cause temperatures to stay below-average, with highs in the low- to mid-50s. Overnight, surface winds will shift to the south, allowing temperatures to be a bit more mild than the night previously. Lows will fall into the mid-30s.

Tuesday, March 22 – Warm & Windy – High 67˚ / Tuesday Night – Mostly Clear – Low 50˚

Tuesday will feel like some of the weather we received last week, with sunny skies and above-normal temperatures! High pressure along the Gulf will continue to move eastward, keeping us dry.

The placement of this high pressure center over the southeast, paired with a surface low over the Plains, will cause the temperature and pressure gradients to tighten. Because of this, winds from the south will ramp up, causing gusts up to 30 mph.

These strong southerly winds will also hike up the temperatures on Tuesday, with highs in the upper-60s in store for Bowling Green.
