All of the major sports leagues have significant Hall of Fame’s, and each has a ballot. The NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, even collegiate associations have Hall’s of Fame. Each year, they induct a new class of players or people that were significant to the individual sport and its continual progress.
Well, this all inspired me to come up with the idea of a “Weather Event Hall of Fame”. The idea is to take a set of pre-requisites and use them to choose events that need to be in the Weather Hall Of Fame, and to “retire” events so-to-say. So, the initial pre-requisites that I am picking out are:
1. The event needs to impact 50% of the state at least.
2. It has to have a significant impact on the state socially.
3. It has to have happened at least 4 years in the past.
4. We can only induct up to 5 events per year.
Based on those pre-requisites, the events that I am suggesting are:
- The 2009 ice storm
- The February 5-6, 2008 severe weather outbreak
- The Hurricane Ike wind event in 2008
- The 2003 ice storm
- The 2010 flood
- The March 2nd severe weather outbreak
- The July 2004 derecho
- The May 30, 2004 severe weather outbreak
- The December 2004 winter storm
That is what I have on the ballot right now, and I will likely ask my fellow writers which 5 they believe should be the ones inducted into the Weather HOF. That decision will likely come soon. If there are any other suggestions, I am up to hear them!
