Monday Morning Bowling Green Weather Update

Real-Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

Today 1/19 – Mostly Sunny – High 56º / Tonight – Partly Cloudy – Low 37º

6am 29º – 9am 42º – 12pm 53º – 3pm 56º – 6pm 51º

As we kick the work week off temperatures are running just below freezing across southern Kentucky this morning. If you are not a fan of the chilly temperatures the good news is that we will see temperatures rebound into the middle to upper 50s by this afternoon. Yes, we will see a mild day in January with high temperatures 10+ degrees above normal.

Fortunately, the warmer temperatures we are seeing are the result of ongoing warm air advection ahead of a weak surface low in the northern plains today. Skies will be mostly clear today, but  skies will become partly cloudy overnight as the low moves closer to our area. Low temperatures will reach the middle to upper 30s.

Tuesday – Mostly Cloudy – High 55º / Tues Night – Cloudy; Iso’d Showers Early – Low 35º

Surface low pressure associated with a weak trough will pass just to our north tomorrow. This will result in an increase in cloud cover from today. Despite mostly cloudy skies, temperatures will reach the middle 50s by tomorrow afternoon.

It does look like there could be a few isolated showers around southern Kentucky tomorrow evening as the disturbance swings through the Ohio Valley. Precipitation amounts look to be very light (< .1″) and most of the precipitation is expected to occur before midnight. The early timing of the precipitation means most of us will just see plain rain showers. If timing changes, some locations could see a few snowflakes mix in with no accumulations expected.

Take a look at the latest run of the 4km NAM model showing what the model thinks radar imagery will look like tomorrow evening. Note the isolated nature of the precipitation.

Wednesday – Mostly Cloudy; Breezy – High 49º / Wed Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low 31º

The jet stream will become zonal on Wednesday as surface low pressure races off to the northeast. This will result in calm weather on Wednesday although skies will remain mostly cloudy.

Temperatures will be slightly cooler with high temperatures struggling to reach 50º. It will be a little breezy during the afternoon with westerly surface winds of 10-15 mph. Look for low temperatures to bottom out around the freezing mark Wednesday night.

As of right now it appears that calm weather will continue through the end of the work week with seasonable temperatures expected.
