Record Setting August (Almost)

Storms moved through Warren County during the late afternoon hours yesterday and prompted a severe thunderstorm warning as well as a flash flood warning. As the storm passed over the city, 1.16″ of rainfall was recorded at the Bowling Green Airport. This was able to bring our monthly rainfall total up to 9.26″,  which is just short of making this the wettest August in Bowling Green on record. We are now just 0.08″ short of tying the all-time record set in 1926.

1)   9.34”     1926

2)  9.26″     2014

3)  8.73”     1923

4)  8.36”     2005

5)  7.71”      1971

6)  7.46”     1942

We still have through midnight on Sunday to add to this rain total and break the record. Personally, I think we will break the record as the weekend forecast for Bowling Green features rain chances on Saturday and Sunday. Rain could be heavy at times on Sunday, and the WPC is currently forecasting up to an inch of rainfall by Monday morning. If most of this falls before midnight, the record could be shattered.

All of the rain we have seen this month has helped to nearly eradicate our drought situation. The latest update from the U.S. drought monitor was released yesterday and outside of a few isolated locations, Warren and Butler counties are now drought-free. The southern edge of Warren and Butler county and the northern edge of Warren county are still classified as abnormally dry.
