March 25th, 2014 snowpocalypse. #WeWillRebuild

This Afternoon – Sunny & BREEZY – High 40˚ / Tonight – Clear & Cold – Low 18˚

3pm 40˚ ~ 6pm 35˚ ~ 9pm 29˚ ~ 12am 26˚ ~ 3am 21˚ ~ 6am 18˚

This morning’s snow showers have progressed well to our southeast, leaving south central Kentucky under a mix of sun & clouds.  Along with these conditions are brisk, northwesterly winds of 15-25mph, which will continue into the late evening as the cold front follows the precip.

Cloud cover should continue to disperse through the remainder of today into tonight.  This will allow temperatures to plummet through this time frame.  Here’s a look at how our surface conditions are shaping up:

Surface Conditions Valid 3pm
Surface Analysis Valid ~3pm

Wed – Sunny – High 48˚ / Wed Night – Increasing Clouds – Low 35˚

High pressure will take full control across the region, leaving us with plentiful amounts of sunshine to soak up.  Winds will remain light and variable, while temp readings are limited to the upper 40s.  Wednesday night, cloud cover will slowly increase across our proximity, as our next disturbance evolves to our west.  Nothing to see here, move on along.

Thu – Partly Cloudy, Iso’d Showers, BREEZY – High 63˚ / Thu Night – Showers Likely – Low 50˚

High pressure advancing off of the east coast will coincide with a low pressure feature to our northwest to produce southwesterly winds of 15-25mph.  This will send temperature values catapulting into the lower 60s, increasing cloud cover at the same time.  Warm, moist air will continue to advect into the area as we progress throughout the day, which may fire off a few isolated rain showers by late afternoon.

On Thursday night, an area of low pressure will cut northeast through the Ohio Valley, swinging an associated cold our way from our west.  This will provide the needed forcing to create widespread rain showers across south central Kentucky.  The GFS precip model below is valid for 1am Friday, and paints a damp picture for us:

GFS Precip Model Valid 1am Fri
GFS Precip Model Valid 1am Fri

The cold front will take its sweet time progressing east of our location, keeping an active pattern around for both Friday & Saturday.  With the given parameters, we could see a few strong thunderstorms with this system as well.  Nothing severe is expected.

The good news is that model trends continue to suggest a very nice, sunny & dry last half of the weekend.  I don’t know about you, but that sounds good to me…and Gandalf.
