Snow Doldrums

mad

Your reaction after looking outside this morning… yes, more snow.

Today 2/8 – Scat’d AM Snow Showers – High 36˚ / Tonight – Iso’d Snow Showers – Low 28˚

**Winter Weather Advisory until 10am CST for Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Simpson and Warren County**

 9am 24˚ ~ 12pm 31˚ ~ 3pm 36˚ ~ 6pm 33˚ ~ 9pm 31˚

As expected, light snow began falling overnight and it continues to fall lightly this morning. Overall, the forecast of a dusting to 2″ of accumulation has been right on target and this forecast should hold true through midday when the snow is expected to tapper off. In general the most anyone should see is around 1″.

Roads are partially covered to completely snow covered this morning. Travel with caution if you must. This is a photo of the bypass courtesy of our very own meteorologist Landon Hampton.

Despite only minor snow accumulations, we should all know by now that there can be some serious travel difficulties on the roadways. Many roads are at least partially snow covered, if  not solid white this morning, so please use common sense and travel with caution this morning if you must travel at all. There could even be some areas of black ice due to the initial melting of snow which could later refreeze with the low to mid 20 degree temperatures this morning.

sat_morn_rad
Radar valid at ~6:15 am CST indicates scattered snow showers across the state with more light snow showers moving in south-central KY from the southwest.

As mentioned, snow should end around midday with only a few lingering flurries possible this afternoon. Otherwise though, the day will remain cloudy overall. If we’re lucky, we may see a peak or two of sun this afternoon. Seems like you’ve read that line already this week right?

Meanwhile, temperatures will remain chilly, but at least we should rise above freezing. **Begin Slow Clap**. We should manage to rise into the mid to upper 30s today with a high around 36. This should allow for some melting of the snow off of roadways.

Tonight should start out with just cloudy skies, but after midnight the chance of a few isolated snow showers or areas of flurries enter the forecast. This will be in association with one of a couple overall weak disturbances moving through.

With each disturbance, a few isolated snow showers will be possible with accumulations of a half an inch or less expected. It doesn’t take much to cause travel problems if we do get any minor accumulations though. In the end though… no big deal, no need to freak out over the chance of a few flakes. Remember, we’ve been through this before… and… we survived!

Also watch for remaining slick areas from this morning’s snowfall; refreeze could be a problem.

Sun – Iso’d Snow Showers – High 37˚ / Sun Night – Iso’d Snow Showers – Low 21˚

Different day… same forecast.

Overall, skies will be cloudy and there could be areas of isolated snow showers or flurries. No real major impacts expected here, but again a dusting is possible. We know a dusting has the potential for some travel impacts. Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 30s again though, which should mitigate any impacts from snow showers.

The simulated reflectivity image below should give a rough idea of the idea of isolated and light nature of the snow showers. Note that I do not expect snow showers to be quite as widespread as the model indicates… but you get the idea.

nwflow
Northwest flow will bring continued chances for isolated snow showers/areas of flurries through the weekend. NAM simulated reflectivity valid for 3 pm Sunday.

With continued areas of weak disturbances moving through in what is known as northwest flow, there will be the continued chance for areas of isolated snow showers overnight. Otherwise, skies will be cloudy and temperatures will trend a little cooler as lows dip into the low 20s.

Mon – Mostly Cloudy – High 28˚ / Mon Night – Iso’d Snow Showers – Low 18˚

Some of the models differ a good deal with temperatures on Monday… overall I decided to side with the GFS model which allows a bit of colder air to slip south into the Ohio Valley. As a result of this cold air moving on the eastern side of a high pressure over the Midwest, temperatures will remain cold on Monday. Highs will struggle to reach 30 under mostly cloudy to cloudy skies.

Overnight, another passing weak disturbance could spark off a few isolated areas of snow showers or flurries. Skies will remain cloudy as temperatures cool into the upper teens.

That’s all for now. Stay warm, stay safe, and stay tuned to @Wx_Or_Not and @WarrenCountyWx on twitter for the latest information. Thanks for reading.
