Wednesday Afternoon Update

This Afternoon – Increasing Clouds – High 23˚ / Tonight – Mostly Cloudy, Flurries – Low

3pm 23˚  ~ 6pm 24˚ ~ 9pm 24˚ ~ 12am 22˚ ~ 3am 13˚ ~ 6am 7˚

A cold front is currently propagating toward the area, which will plow to our east as we get into this evening and tonight.  This has caused cloud cover to increase across south central Kentucky sooner than expected, which we’ll continue to experience through the remainder of the day.  Temperatures in the lower 20s will coincide with northwesterly winds to create wind chills in the single digits.  Here’s  a look at the current setup:

Brisk, northwesterly winds will amp up to 15-25mph as the front passes, which will usher in another reinforcement of cold air.  Values overnight will dip into the single digits under cloudy skies, with wind chills falling to subzero readings.

If you have pets, BRING THEM INSIDE.  Farmers, prepare accordingly for livestock cold stress.  Disconnect garden hoses that are outside.  Check antifreeze in your vehicle, and make sure you have a source of heat in case of a power outage.  Also…take the necessary precautions to prevent frozen pipes.

Thu – Partly Cloudy & COLD – High 15˚ / Thu Night – Clear – Low

**Wind Chill Advisory from 3am – 12pm Thursday. Wind chill values are forecast to fall to 5 – 15˚ below zero**

FRIGID will be the term used to describe Thursday.  Early morning lows in the single digits will be joined by wind chills that could be subzero.  BRRRRR!!!  Although clouds will break up a bit as high pressure builds in from the west, northwesterly winds will limit high temps to the upper teens, with overnight lows tumbling to near 0˚…yes, you read that correctly.

Fri – Sunny – High 25˚ / Fri Night – Scat’d Snow Showers – Low 19˚

Partly to mostly sunny skies will accompany us through the start of our Friday, as temperatures continue to be limited to the 20s.  As we get into Friday night, a clipper system will dive southeast across the Ohio Valley, which could result in scattered snow showers across our proximity.  Take a look at the GFS precip loop below, valid from 12pm Friday – 6pm Sat, for a better idea of how this system may evolve:

GFS Precip Loop Valid 12pm Fri - 6pm Sat
GFS Precip Loop Valid 12pm Fri – 6pm Sat

This doesn’t look like anything significant, however, we’ll need to keep a close eye on it.  You should be very familiar with how these systems behave by now, as we’ve been impacted by several over the past few weeks.  I won’t be making any calls regarding potential accumulation until tomorrow.  We know what they’re capable of producing.  The sporadic, hit & miss nature of these setups are really a pain to forecast.

That’s all I’ve got for now.  As always, stay in touch with me @Wx_Or_Not for more frequent information.  Have a great rest of your day, and thanks for reading.
