Growing Season “Freezes” To A Halt Tonight

A

very bitter, cold, Canadian airmass is moving into the Bluegrass State, and will bring with it the first subfreezing temperatures of the season by Friday morning. A freeze warning has been issued for the entire south and west central Kentucky region from 1am – 9am Friday morning.

A Freeze Warning is issued during the growing season when surface temperatures are expected to drop below freezing over a large area for an extended period of time, regardless whether or not frost develops.

Temperature values will have the rug pulled out from under them, plummeting to 25-30 degrees during the early morning hours of Friday.  Delicate outdoor plants left without care will perish on Friday morning, and this freeze will most likely bring an end to the prosperous sprouting season.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing again Saturday morning.

By early next week, daytime highs will rebound to near 60 degrees, as our flow gradually becomes southerly again, advecting warmer air into our region from the Gulf States.
