Roller Coaster Weather for Bowling Green

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Wednesday, 1/13 – Mostly Sunny; Clouds Increasing – High 37˚ / Tonight – Mostly Cloudy – Low 32˚

Good (chilly) morning, Bowling Green! Whether you like it or not, winter has officially arrived. While those of us in South Central Kentucky haven’t seen much of that white stuff stick, we have definitely felt the strong winds and cold temperatures!

Wind gusts up to 35 mph were recorded yesterday at the Bowling Green airport, as winds shifted to the northwest and allowed much cooler air to filter into the region. High pressure has settled into our area for the rest of today, allowing for some sunny skies and calm weather – with the cold temperatures sticking around.

Highs today will remain in the mid to upper-30s, which is several degrees below the climate normal of 45°. Temperatures won’t change much as we move into the overnight hours, however; southerly winds and an increase in cloud cover will keep our low right around the freezing mark.

Thursday, 1/14 – Mostly Sunny – High 54˚ / Thursday Night – Rain Chance Late – Low 39˚

An upper-level ridge paired with strong, southerly winds will bring us a nice warm-up for tomorrow. So, in tune with the title of this blog post, temperatures are trekking up one of those large hills Thursday. Even if you claim you embraced winter with open arms, a taste of the 50s won’t do you any harm.

Conditions may be a bit breezy as highs make it into the low to mid-50s on Thursday… A nice 15° warm-up from Wednesday!

The next low-pressure system will come into play late Thursday night as it pushes eastward and into our area. This will allow for increasing clouds ahead of slight rain chances late into the overnight hours. Temperatures Thursday night will drop to just around the 40° mark.

Friday, 1/15 – Rain Likely – High 52˚ / Friday Night – Chance for Rain/Snow – Low 34˚

Rain chances will pick up and continue over the course of Friday, with the heaviest rain falling during the mid-morning hours and into early afternoon. After reaching a high in the low to mid-50s once again, temperatures will drop behind a passing cold front.

One way to tell the passage of a cold front from the forecast map below is with the wind barbs; when the barbs shift from the southwest to northwest, the cold front has passed.

As temperatures drop once again, the chance for some brief snow showers come back into the picture… and the roller coaster continues.

As with the other systems, areas to our north will have a greater chance at seeing snow, but an isolated chance is still possible for those of us here in Bowling Green. We just have to wait a little longer for the rain/snow line to drop south into our area.
