Scorching Today; Severe Weather Potential Monday

Today 6/7 – Sunny & Muggy – High 91˚(!) / Tonight – Iso’d Storms – Low 72˚

If you’re a fan of hot sweat, frizzed hair and damp clothing, today is the day for you!  It will be a brutal day as far as our weather is concerned, with high dewpoints coinciding with plentiful amounts of sun, along with southwesterly flow to make for nearly unbearable conditions.

If you plan on being outdoors, be sure to stay hydrated and layer up with sun screen regularly.  If you’re bald like me…don’t forget a hat.

Although unlikely, we can’t rule out a few stray storms this afternoon.  Our atmosphere will be primed for summer-like storms, however, the lack of any sort of forcing looks to greatly limit coverage.

Mon 6/8 – Storm Likely (Potentially Severe) – High 88˚ / Mon Night – Scat’d Storms – Low 65˚

Our atmosphere will become increasingly unstable thru Monday, with the potential for strong/severe storms during the afternoon and evening.  A combination of upper forcing, along with an approaching cold front and other essential parameters will lay the foundation for quickly intensifying convection.

The Storm Prediction Center’s latest convective outlook includes all of south central Kentucky in a Slight Risk for severe weather Monday:

Main threats with any storm that fires will be torrential rainfall, damaging winds and hail.  An isolated tornado seems like a stretch, but we can’t rule it out.  The more sunshine we see through the early part of our Monday, the more likely we’ll experience strong to severe storms during the afternoon and evening.

The NAM 4km simulated radar model below loops every three hours from 1pm to 10pm Monday.  It favors the idea of strong storms sliding southeast over the area during this time:

Again…depending on how much rain we see Monday morning in comparison to rays of sunshine will determine the strength of storms during the afternoon.  The more sunshine we get, the more unstable our atmosphere will become, thus creating a more favorable environment for inclement weather.

Tue 6/9 – Sunny; Iso’d Storms – High 85˚ / Tue Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 60˚

As we get into Tuesday a more summer-esque pattern will take over.  Plentiful amounts of sunshine will continue to claim the skies over south central Kentucky, with the potential for afternoon, pop-up showers and thunderstorms.

We’ll continue to experience this pattern through midweek, before our next disturbance moves in Thursday & Friday, increasing rain chances across the region.

That’s all for the Sunday update.  Be sure to stay in touch with @WxOrNotBG & @wkuCHAOS for the latest real-time weather information.  Have a great day, and thanks for reading!
