Windy Today; Snow Chances Thursday

WINDY and warm today; widespread rain to SNOW transition possible Thursday.

Temperatures as of 6 AM are hovering right around the freezing mark for most of the region according to the Kentucky Mesonet.

Temperatures will warm significantly today thanks to strong southwest surface flow. Although models say we’ll only make it to the low to mid 50s, models usually don’t perform well with this scenario, thus I think we’ll make it to the upper 50s today. Gotta be smarter than the models…

Those southwest winds will be quite strong. Sustained winds up to 20 mph will be possible this afternoon, with gusts as high as 35 mph also possible. This makes me wonder if we reach the 60° mark in some locations.

Clouds will be on the increase overnight, but southwest winds between 10 and 15 mph will keep temperatures in the low to mid 40s.

Cold Front Thursday

A cold front is expected to work through the region Thursday afternoon. Temperatures will likely warm to around 50° before the front works through the region, dropping temperatures.

The front will also provide the region with a chance of rain. Showers will likely begin around the noon hour and continue into the afternoon and evening hours.

Thursday Night Snow Chances

As the cold air enters the region Thursday evening and into the overnight hours, the rain is expected to changeover to snow. The main question remains how fast or how slow the moisture will exit the region. Thursday night lows will drop to around 20°. The NAM doesn’t think we’ll see much precipitation.

The NAM model prefers a faster exit, which would lead to very little snow. The GFS model prefers a slower exit, which would lead to enough snow to equate to some minor accumulations. Hopefully one solution will give to the other today and we’ll know a bit more this afternoon. Below is the GFS solution.

Cold Friday

A few lingering flurries or snow showers may be possible on Friday morning. One thing is for sure, Friday will be much colder than previous days as highs are forecast to be around the freezing mark, despite mostly sunny skies.

Friday night will bring partly cloudy skies to the region and lows in the upper teens.

Looking Ahead

We’ll be watching another system this weekend. This will also bring a chance of rain and snow to the region. The pattern remains very active overall.
