Storm Chase Day 11: 4 States in One Day

The last day of the trip was another great weather day. We woke up in Goodland, Kansas and decided to avoid the headache of the severe weather to our south and east, and we headed west to southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. There were a couple issues facing the play to our east:

  1. It had terrible topography. Eastern Oklahoma and Kansas are not very flat, and have a ton of trees.
  2. Wind profiles were not favorable for tornadoes.
  3. There was a ton of CAPE, but a strong cap above the surface. The models showed that cap breaking at once, and a liner system developing.

These are issues we didn’t want to face, especially when we can just go to Colorado and New Mexico. The environment looked pretty favorable for supercells there, and we were gonna avoid the crowds, so we headed for Springfield, Colorado, where we hung out in a park for about an hour before chasing a storm over northern New Mexico. Not gonna lie, New Mexico didn’t disappoint.

The storm ended up moving into the Texas Panhandle, where it continued to be awesome.

To say that New Mexico and Texas were probably my favorite spots on the trip is an understatement. I loved those two states, and have plenty of memories there.
