Tornado Watch Issued

*** Tornado Watch in effect until 9 PM***

A significant severe weather outbreak is expected this afternoon and evening

Temperatures have warmed well into the upper 70s to low 80s. Dew point temperatures are expected to continue to rise into the upper 50s to low 60s by mid to late afternoon. This, combined with relatively cool, dry air aloft will create moderate instability, aka fuel for thunderstorms. Shear will be sufficient for supercells across the region leading to a hail, wind, and tornado threat. Some of the hail could be very large (2″+ in diameter). A few tornadoes, should they develop, could be significant.

I’ll spare a meteorological discussion because it’s more important for you to be prepared. 1. Have a way to get warnings. A NOAA Weather Radio is the best way to get warning information. Another way is to stay tuned to local weather sources. Don’t rely on social media, but we should tweet the latest warnings @wxornotBG. WKU students and faculty are urged to follow @WKUweather2. Know what to do when a severe warning is issued. Go to the most interior room in your house, on the lowest level. With strong tornadoes possible, try to get to a basement if possible. If driving, do not try to outrun a tornado, try to find a sturdy building to take shelter in. 3. If you come across damage…do your best to help others. However, be conscious of downed electrical lines. 4. Report severe weather…when it is safe to do so. You can report it via Twitter to @NWSLouisville or @wxornotBG, or call 911 if applicable.

Be informed and stay safe.
