Warm Today, but Cold Air and Winter Return Soon

Real-Time Radar

Yesterday’s Weather

Yesterday’s weather was pretty terrible for much of the day, just as I suspected. Low clouds hung around for much of the day around the region, making for a cold and ugly start to the day for many. We finally saw clouds clear, but temps only rose to around 50°F.

Discussion

Ahhh, yes, Old Man winter holding off for just a bit more. While we bask in unseasonably warm temps (again), just to our west and northwest, behind a cold front, lies a much colder air mass.

This cold front is associated with a surface low, currently centered over eastern Iowa and western Illinois. This surface low has created a pretty strong pressure gradient south of its warm front, allowing for southwesterly flow to warm stuff up pretty quickly to our west. We have a narrow window for warming, as precip looks to move in around noon.

This precip is gonna be light. The atmosphere looks dry through midday, so some of this may not reach the ground. I expect rain to still fall, but maybe not as intensely as it would otherwise. In the meantime, however, I do think that we end up hitting 59°F as a high for the day. Southwesterly flow should be strong enough to pull us to that number.

After the cold front moves through, then we see old man winter again…kind of. The airmass that look to move into the region for Thursday through the weekend looks more seasonal than cold.

Northwesterly or west-northwesterly flow will really be the story going into that same timeframe. Low level moisture in the region will likely create for some partly sunny skies in the afternoon, occasionally becoming mostly cloudy.

Yesterday, I thought that this would produce some flurries across the region, but I don’t see that occurring. I think that there may be a very isolated flurry, but not widespread. Highs tomorrow will likely land in the upper 30s.

Friday looks…interesting, I guess. We will be firmly entrenched in the backside of the deep low to our northeast, but pieces of atmospheric forcing will still be rotating into the region. This will force a weak front to push near the region on Friday.

The "front" is more of a surface trough, but it will provide lift for potential precip on Friday. h/t pivotalweather.com

This will likely help to force some showers, but I don’t think they’ll be widespread, and I don’t think they’ll be snow. It looks as if we will have worked out way to west-southwesterly flow by that point, which will only warm our temps up at the surface. So the snow chances have kinda gone in the toilet.

The weekend looks to feature more of the same. Seasonably cold, but Saturday is looking more and more like it may be warmer than I may have initially thought, so that is something to watch.

Today’s Key Points

  • Warm today; highs in the upper 50s
  • Light rain around midday
  • Cooler tomorrow through the weekend
  • Snow chances are…eh
