Rain, Clouds and Snow All in the Forecast

Real-time Radar

Yesterday’s Weather

Yesterday was kinda one of those day that you just roll your eyes at. It was cloudy all day, it was windy and it was much colder than it had been the previous few days. The high occurred at midnight, as the temperature fell throughout the day. The winds made it much worse, but what are you gonna do?

Discussion

This may be the first time in quite sometime where I can say for sure that the time period I am forecasting for looks fairly boring weatherwise. I am, shockingly, pretty excited about that. That is such a stark contrast from what it was a couple of months ago. However, we have just simply been so active over the past month and a half that it is nice to have a little break.

The pattern is pretty simple. We have a shortwave trough that is exiting off the coast of the US, forcing a strong Nor’easter that is impacting New York and parts of New England. They’ve seen snow, rain and strong winds up there.

We are in the convergent region (aloft) of that shortwave’s jet streak, which is forcing a surface high pressure system to form across our region and move through today. This will help keep our weather pretty benign. We do, however, have some residual low level moisture trapped in place underneath an inversion, which should keep clouds locked in for much of the day.

By tonight, though, look for clearing skies and temps dropping into the 30s. A new shortwave trough will be quickly approaching as the current one exits. This trough won’t be nearly as amplified as the first one was, and will be much more progressive. It will be associated with a surface low pressure, which will force our surface wind vectors to the southwest within its warm sector. You know the drill; temps rise quicker in southwesterly flow!

That is why I think we see temps in the 60s tomorrow. Look for some isolated rain showers tomorrow night as well, but nothing too crazy.

By Thursday, temps have fallen into the 30s under a northwesterly flow regime. Again, we are looking at the possibility for low clouds to hang tough within low level moisture. Also: that could potentially set us up for isolated flurries on Thursday afternoon, so watch for that!

Heading into you weekend, it looks cold. We are looking at the possibility of some snow showers or flurries over the weekend, but we’ll have more information on that over the next couple days!

Today’s Key Point

  • Clouds hang tough today
  • Warmer tomorrow; SWly flow brings temps into the 60s
  • Rain showers possible
  • Partly sunny with isolated flurries on Thursday?
