Forecast Discussion

Warm weather to continue in south-central Kentucky for the time being. Cooler conditions today will lead to warming conditions through the rest of the week. What season is this again?

Ridging, along with high pressure, is moving through the region today. This will help keep rainfall out of the forecast for today. However, it will help keep temperatures fairly mild for January. We’re waking up to temperatures in the mid 40s this morning and you can expect these temperatures to warm to the low 50s this afternoon. The ridging and high pressure will help dry out the region, leading to partly sunny skies this afternoon.

While most of the night will be dry, a few showers will be possible late tonight and into Thursday morning. Lows will be a bit chilly, around 43°.

Thursday looks like one wet day. A warm front located well south of the region will begin to move northward on Thursday. This will bring a surge of moist air with it. Expect rain during the morning hours. A brief lull may be possible around noon before heavier rain picks up in the afternoon and evening hours as precipitable water values increase to around 1.5″. This simply means there’s a lot of moisture in the atmosphere.

Showers will continue overnight, decreasing in coverage. The Weather Prediction Center believes we’ll see around 1 – 1.25″ of rain on Thursday. This is a bit more conservative than the NAM model, which produces around 1.5″. The high resolution NAM predicts more around 0.75″, but has swaths of much heavier rain, indicative of the high precipitable water values. The GFS model predicts about 1.6″ of rain, while the Short Range Ensemble model predicts around 1.2″. The average of these is around 1.25″, so I’d expect to see rainfall from 1 – 1.5″.

The weather for Friday looks great! The warm front will push well north of the region, leading to southerly flow and decreasing rain chances. Isolated showers may be possible around noon, however partly cloudy skies are likely the rest of the day. Temperatures will warm nicely into the mid to upper 60s!
