Yesterday’s Weather

Yesterday was honestly a bit just bleh across the region. Though it got fairly warm, the cloud cover was locked the region in its grip as rainfall and storms developed to our southwest and moved towards us. We still need the rainfall, though, so anything is welcome. And we were able to avoid the severe weather that hit the Deep South, so that is a major plus.

Discussion

This entire week looked a lot more interesting earlier this week, and now it only looks marginally interesting. I will get to that in a second.

We currently have a shortwave trough propagating towards the northeastern US and this has forced a surface low centered just to our west. These are the primary sources for the forcing of the showers that moved through last night. These have propagated off into Ohio, Pennsylvania and other parts of the northeastern Ohio Valley.

As these features propagate out of the region, another piece will move in. A strong cold front centered across the Midwest is marching its way towards us, forcing clouds and light showers ahead of it. Behind this front are much, much cooler temperatures. Ahead of it, temperatures will hang in the upper 50s, moving only a couple degrees from our current temperature.

Fog looks to also be an issue this morning. With the rainfall that occurred last night, surface saturation is occurring to our west. Watch for this to occur in the region this morning. By this evening. the cold front will move through, ushering in northwesterly flow. This will quickly advect a cold and dry air mass into the region.

By tomorrow morning, temps will likely be in the upper 20s, with clearer skies. And that is the point about tomorrow: it looks cold. Highs should only reach the low to mid 30s, but the sunshine should be out for much of it!

This will be good because clouds increase again on Wednesday night ahead of another shortwave trough and forcing in the atmosphere. This shortwave is forecast to move on through during the day on Thursday, giving us the potential for snowfall.

Yes, that is right! Our first snowfall looks to occur on Thursday. The snow looks light, but it should be enough to cause some havoc, especially as cold as it looks to be. Highs only look to reach the upper 20s, so snowfall should have no issues accumulating. We are looking at snowfall totals in the .25″ to .75″ range. This may seem light, but with roadways cold, this is the dangerous range.

Keep reading here over the next day or so as we get more details about this specific snowfall, as it could present some travel difficulties. Now, I know a lot of you are probably wondering about the Saturday system. The jury is still out on that one, but at this time, an accumulating snowfall doesn’t look likely. It is a bummer. We will know much more by tomorrow night on this system, so there is still a chance, but it is a small one.
