Much Warmer Weather in Store for Bowling Green

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Wednesday, 2/17- Mostly Cloudy – High 42˚ / Tonight – Mostly Cloudy – Low 30˚

Good morning, Bowling Green! So I’ve noticed over the past few days that there are two types of people when it comes to winter weather – those who jump for joy at the sight of a snowflake and others who wish spring would get here already.

While my last blog post was aimed more for the satisfaction of winter babies, this one will hopefully brighten the days of all who are longing for sun and the 60s (that includes me).

After the doom and gloom of several precipitation systems that made walking to class less than desirable, surface high pressure will help to bring drier conditions to the Bowling Green area today.

As we transition from the influence of an upper-level trough to a ridge and finally zonal flow aloft, clouds will stick around with temperatures remaining close to 10° below the Bowling Green climate normal.

Have faith, guys. The forecast gets better.

Thursday, 2/18 – Partly Cloudy – High 55˚ / Thursday Night – Mostly Clear – Low 42˚

Beginning Thursday, a pattern change will bring much warmer, above-average temperatures (and even some sunshine!) to the Bowling Green area. I think we could all use some of that.

As high pressure moves eastward, winds will begin their shift to the south and clouds should clear by mid to late morning Thursday. The eastward movement of the upper-level trough will give us enough support to hit highs in the lower-50s… We’re back to normal, folks.

Winds will kick up starting Thursday night as gradients in pressure and temperature tighten. Overnight lows will remain fairly mild, with temperatures staying above 40°.

Friday, 2/19- Mostly Sunny – High 65˚ / Friday Night – Slight Chance of Rain – Low 50˚

Bowling Green weather will really kick it up a notch on Friday, as the aforementioned gradients continue to tighten. This will bring a continuing increase in temperature and breezy conditions to wrap up the workweek.

The increase in gradients are due to a fairly deep low pressure system that is tracking toward the Great Lakes. The gradients ahead of the front will bring breezy condition; as gradients tighten, the distance between differing temperature and pressure levels decrease.

The atmosphere is always trying to reach a state of equilibrium, causing winds to blow from high pressure to lower pressure. The greater the change in temperature and pressure values over a given distance, the stronger the winds.

With this in mind, strong southerly flow (20+ mph winds) will cause temperatures to soar into the mid-60s by the afternoon! That’s right… It’s going to feel like spring in Bowling Green, Kentucky!

We have a very slight chance at seeing some showers Friday night with the passage of a front, but rain will be scattered and limited. Temperatures overnight will drop to around 50°.
