Antarctic Sea Ice Decreases This Year

In a recent article from NASA, scientists created a time lapse video of the maximum Antarctic sea ice extent, which is several hundred thousand square miles smaller than the record-breaking extent from last year.

According to sea ice scientist Walt Meier from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the sea ice extent is returning to normal after three consecutive years of record high extents.

The recent strengthening of El Niño is believed to be the cause of the smaller sea ice extent this year.
