Evening Severe Weather Update

Real-time radar:

Though our coverage area hasn’t seen much of anything thus far, the area does remain under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8 pm for the threat of severe weather continuing with this first round of thunderstorms moving through the region.

Cities around the state have seen severe weather for the majority of the afternoon and evening hours, as damaging winds and flash flooding have been a major culprit across areas to our north and east. Check out the wicked shelf cloud I caught just to the west of Lexington earlier today.

Anyways, as we head into your evening and overnight hours, another round of strong/severe thunderstorms are expected to impact the region. The radar image below illustrates what happened in round 1, and where round 2 is expected to come from. This image was valid at 6:05pm this evening.

Don’t let your guard down. As the main forcing over the upper Midwest begins to slide southeastward, we are looking at maybe an even greater threat overnight through the region. For that reason, the Storm Prediction Center has kept many of us in a “Moderate Risk” for severe storms going into the overnight hours.

Many of the parameters that I am looking at appear favorable for another severe line of storms to impact the region into the overnight hours. The highest risk for severe weather looks to be between 9 PM tonight and 5 AM Tuesday morning.

The main threats with this round will be cloud-to-ground lightning, destructive winds of 60-70+ mph and flash flooding. Secondary threats will include large hail and the possibility of a tornado.
