California Called, And It Wants Our Rain

Recently (this year), the state of Kentucky has seen several events in which we have received almost absurdly large amounts of precipitation. We have had about 5 major precipitation events across the state that have dramatically reversed us from what looked to be a moderate drought in January to major flooding here in April.

Well, California has been the exact opposite for four years now. California is seeing an unprecedented drought of the likes that hasn’t been seen in a long time. California is waaaaay deep in a drought at this point, and it has been ongoing since 2012. Recently, the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains was 5% of what it typically is this time of year. With the wet season for them ending, they have an obvious concern for water across the region.

This was made ultimately apparent with the Governor of California recently issuing mandatory water conservations for the entire state. “As Californians, we have to pull together and save water in every way we can,” he said in his comments about the issue. The issuing of mandatory restrictions to water is fairly unprecedented, and is something that I am intrigued to see regulated across that region as the old restrictions they had in place only helped drop water usage a little bit.

On the flip side of the script is Kentucky, who has seen absurd amounts of rain in the recent months. Louisville, Bowling Green, and Lexington have all seen significant precip events that have caused flooding and the ending of what could have been a drought. I am sure many of you would love to send some rain California’s way. So, here are some ideas of how we can help:

  • Do your native rain dance. Whether it be the Harlem Shake or the dougie, a rain dance directed their way cannot hurt them
  • Collect rain in dozens of buckets, and sell it. A guy in Boston sold snow from the record breaking snow this year, and you could do the same. Maybe you could even collect enough to make a sizable amount for the California government.
  • You can hope for the best for them

I’ve run out of good ideas. Point is: California needs rain, and we don’t. Maybe they can take some of ours! For more info on the drought, make sure to check out this link.
