Warm Up Tease

This Afternoon – Sunny & Cold – High 31˚ / Tonight – Partly Cloudy; Flurries – Low 21˚

A weak cold front is approaching from our northwest, which will pass southeast across the area tonight.  Ahead of this feature, southerly flow has combined with sunny skies to give us little relief from the cold.  The surface model below, valid for 2pm this afternoon, displays the front closing in on the area.

Temperatures are currently located in the low 30s, and will do nothing but fall as we get closer to sunset.  As the cold front passes, clouds will increase across south central Kentucky.  Although unlikely, we can’t rule out the possibility of a few flying flurries accompanying this boundary.  Lows will hold around 20˚ tonight.

Wed 2/25 – Increasing Clouds – High 37˚ / Wed Night – Cloudy; Scat’d Snow Showers – Low 18˚

Two separate weather systems will be approaching from our southwest and northwest, which will cause cloud cover to increase throughout our Hump Day.  Southerly flow will once again amp up ahead of these disturbances, sending temps into the upper 30s.

Wednesday night, the southern system will track northeast along the East Coast, bringing the possibility of scattered snow showers to south central Kentucky.  The GFS model below is valid for 6pm Wednesday evening, and illustrates how this system may behave:

Minor accumulations of a dusting to 1/2″ can’t be ruled out with this initial disturbance.  A few of us could even see up to 1+” of the white stuff on the ground.  It will be worth keeping a close eye on this disturbance, as it could have implications on the Thursday morning commute.

Thu 2/26 – Scat’d Snow Showers – High 33˚ / Thu Night – Cloudy – Low

A cold front will slice across the region on Thursday, bringing scattered snow chances, along with yet another reinforcing shot of cold air…

At this point, I give up.

The latest guidance indicates that any snow that comes along with this disturbance will be light in nature.  With that being said, minor accumulations will be possible.  With high temperatures expected to flirt around the freezing threshold, stay weary of potential slick spots.

Northwesterly winds will take over late Thursday, which will send overnight lows tumbling into the single digits.

Our Friday will be frigid with temps limited to the low 20s.  Don’t get down, folks… warmer weather is slated for the weekend.  Highs in the mid 30s on Saturday look to catapult to near 50˚ by Sunday afternoon!  Better dig out that swim gear…
