Snow Chances Later This Week

This Afternoon – Cold & Breezy – High 30˚ / Tonight – Clear & Frigid – Low 17˚

Brisk, northwesterly winds have been a nuisance across the region today.  Although conditions have calmed to an extent this afternoon, winds are still filtering in at 10-20mph.  This will accompany partly cloudy skies, which will result in temps hanging around 30˚, with wind chills in the upper teens/lower 20s.  The HRRR model below displays wind chill values at 4pm this afternoon:

With skies clearing out tonight, lows will quickly tumble, eventually bottoming out in the upper teens.

Tuesday 2/3 – Mostly Sunny – High 44º / Tues Night – Mostly Clear – Low 30º

High pressure will responsible for keeping our region dry under sunny skies tomorrow.  Southerly flow will be a welcomed guest, as it looks to catapult afternoon highs into the mid 40s.  The surface model provided is valid for Tuesday morning, and showcases the area of high pressure in control:

Our calm weather pattern will continue Tuesday night, with lows falling to around 30°.

The forecast will get much more interesting as we get into midweek…

A surface front will approach south central Kentucky from the northwest throughout the day.  Ahead of the front, we’ll enjoy beautiful conditions with high temperatures making a run at 50º, thanks to warm air advecting into the area from the south.

Don’t get too excited.  Cloud cover will gradually build throughout the afternoon, with the potential for light, scattered precip tracking in by Wednesday evening.  We’ll be on the chain lift approaching the ‘first drop’ on this weather roller coaster Wednesday evening, with the potential for a rain to snow transition around midnight, as temperatures plummet below freezing.

At this time, snow accumulations look minor, with anywhere from a dusting to 1″ not out of the question.  The most recent SREF snow probability map gives us a 50/50 shot at seeing this much snow come to fruition:

In short… there’s plenty of time for guidance to alter, so be sure to stay updated for the latest on this potential weather producer.  With the timing of this disturbance, the Thursday morning commute could be an issue.  We’ll be keeping a close eye on it.

And now for a PSA on why you shouldn’t drive or park on frozen bodies of water.
