Ice Bowl Conditions

The Green Bay Packers will host the Dallas Cowboys in one of today’s NFL divisional playoff games. The game is set to kickoff at noon CST at historic Lambeau field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This game has drawn some comparisons to a well-known playoff matchup between the Packers and Cowboys at Lambeau Field on December 31, 1967 known as the Ice Bowl.

The Ice Bowl earned its name when the game was played in temperatures that fluctuated from -12° to -14°F with wind chill values as low as -37°F. Officially, the Ice Bowl is the coldest game played in NFL history.

With a rematch between the two teams on the slate for later today, will the weather help to create Ice Bowl conditions? Fortunately for fans and players, it will be cold tomorrow afternoon but significantly warmer than the Ice Bowl. A weak cold front  will be positioned just south of Green Bay which will result in mostly cloudy skies and the chance for a few flurries (no accumulation) at Lambeau Field.

Temperatures will be at least 30 degrees warmer than the Ice Bowl today with the kickoff temperature expected to be near 18ºF with afternoon high temperatures rising to near 20°F by the end of the game. Winds will be light (3-5mph) so wind chills are expected to remain in the teens.

The Packers’ players will be accustomed to game-time temperatures as the todays’ forecast high of 21ºF is only three degrees below average. The Dallas Cowboys may have a little harder time adjusting to the cold as they are accustomed to playing in a climate-controlled stadium.
