Latest Snow Update

Let’s cut right to the chase.  Everyone wants to know when, where and how the snow will affect them.  Let me break it down for you.

Right now all the critical thickness lines are well north of Bowling Green.  This is why we’re seeing pure rain falling at the moment. The latest model guidance suggests that these thickness lines will take their precious little time shifting south over the rest of the evening and overnight.

This means the dominant precipitation type tonight will be rain rather than snow.  In fact, according to mesoanalysis, warm air is still advecting into the mid levels of the atmosphere.  See for yourself (note the red on the map over Kentucky):

The latest high resolution models depict a changeover from rain to snow during the early morning hours of Monday, around 4 AM. In other words, don’t stay up to try and see the first major flakes of the season.

Such a late changeover also means…don’t expect too much in the way of snowfall accumulations.  The HRRR model gives us a mixed bag of precipitation around 3 AM:

Dry air will begin to work into the region at about the same time the changeover occurs, which will also cut down on snowfall totals across the region.  Snow showers, some of which could be moderate to heavy in nature, may limit visibility.

These heavy bands will be possible when the wrap around moisture reaches the region.  As for now, below is what I’m expecting for snow accumulations tomorrow morning.  Again, these could be pretty generous given some of the latest data…

In summation, this snow is not all it’s hyped up to be.  Sure, some moderate to heavy snow will be possible during the morning commute, so that may slow you down some.  Accumulations are expected to minor, perhaps around 1″ in Bowling Green, and that’s being generous, especially if we get torched by the warm air aloft.

Temperatures will continue to fall throughout the day on Monday. The high will occur during the morning hours, and decrease during the day.  Noon temperatures may be around 30°.  Winds will by gusty at times (10-20mph), making it feel more like the upper teens – lower 20s. Below is a meteogram, it gives you an idea of the crashing temperatures.

Temperatures will bottom out on Monday night & Tuesday morning when they reach the mid teens. When you add wind speeds out of the northwest at ~10 mph, it will feel like it is just above 0°. Be sure to bring pets indoors on Monday night and bundle up for those Tuesday morning commutes.

Landon is tweeting very frequent updates so be sure to follow him @WxOrNotBG.  That’s all I have for now, so be sure to stay updated through the remainder of night and into the morning hours.  Again…be safe during the morning commute!
