Washington D.C. Tornado Warning

Today was a historic day for the nation, National Weather Service, and weather in general. Why was today so historic, you ask? Well the Washington D.C tornado warning that occurred at 12:25 PM ET this afternoon was the first tornado warning ever issued for the nation’s capital. The graphic below shows that this is indeed the only time Washington D.C. has bee included in a tornado warning polygon.

Below is the official warning box issued by the National Weather Service in Baltimore and Washington. The storm had some fairly broad rotation on it. As of now, no damage has been reported within the polygon area. That’s a good thing considering over 700,000 people lived within that tornado warning polygon.
