A Few Thunderstorm Chances Looming for Bowling Green

Real Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

Today 7/31 – Partly Cloudy, Warmer – High 85º / Tonight – Partly Cloudy– Low 61º

6am 58º – 9am 73º – 12pm 80º – 3pm 84º – 6pm 81º

Good morning, today is the last day of July, and the weather continues to act like it has not gotten the memo. Temperatures have run slightly below average all week, and that will continue to be the case today. The stubborn upper level trough over the eastern half of the country continues to be responsible for the cooler temperatures, and high temperatures in Bowling Green will reach the middle 80s today.

There is a weak disturbance to our south that is spreading some rain chances to the gulf states, and even though our area will stay rain-free today, we will see an increase of clouds. Check out the latest infrared satellite image showing clouds moving into southern Kentucky this morning:

As we head into tonight, temperatures will drop down into the lower 60s.

Fri – Partly Cloudy; Iso’d Thunderstorms – High 87º / Fri Night – Partly Cloudy, Iso’d Thunderstorms – Low 63º

On Friday, the influence of the upper level trough will help to spark the slight chance of some thunderstorms across the area. An upper level vorticity maximum will rotate through the area, providing the lift needed to produce these thunderstorms across much of the southeast.

Not everyone will see rain, but a few folks may see a quick hitting downpour tomorrow afternoon, so make sure to have your umbrellas handy. Outside of any isolated thunderstorms, skies will be partly cloudy with high temperatures in the middle 80s once again tomorrow.

The chance for isolated thunderstorms will continue into Friday night as well with low temperatures heavily dependent on cloud cover. If skies remain partly cloudy, look to see lows in the lower 60s, but if we see more clouds than expected, lows may remain in the middle to upper 60s.

Sat – Partly Cloudy; Iso’d Thunderstorms– High 86º / Sat Night – Partly Cloudy, Iso’d Thunderstorms – Low 64º

Saturday’s forecast will be a repeat of tomorrow with partly cloudy skies and the chance for isolated thunderstorms. Precipitation coverage looks marginally better on Saturday, but it will be yet another day where not everyone will see rain.

The trigger for Saturday’s thunderstorm chances will continue to be upper level vorticity, or “spin in the atmosphere.” Check out the latest run of the GFS model showing vorticity around the area by Saturday evening:

Rain chances should dissipate by Sunday as the upper level trough finally begins to move off to the east. This will also result in temperatures warming back into the 90s by early next week. Hopefully we will start to see some more widespread rain chances by later next week, as dry conditions are really starting to settle into Kentucky, and it has got many of us starting to feel like this guy:
