Today the National Weather Service in Nashville, TN completed the SAILS upgrade on their WSR-88D. SAILS stands for Supplemental Adaptive Intra-Volume Low-Level Scan which enables radar scans at 0.5 degrees to be completed a second time during the column scan from 0.5 to 19.5 degrees. This enhances radar efficiency at the lowest level which is often times the most crucial scan during severe weather operations.
