Summer Solstice Occurs Tomorrow

We are less than 24 hours away from the Summer Solstice and the official start of summer. Although it has certainly felt like summer the past few weeks, astronomical summer does not start until the longest day of the year; June 21.

The Summer Solstice will officially take place at 5:51 A.M. CST tomorrow morning when the Sun is pointed directly at the Tropic of Cancer. This means that the sun is pointed at a latitude of 23.5 degrees N, and locations in the Northern hemisphere will experience their longest day of the year while locations in the Southern hemisphere will experience their shortest day.

Here are Bowling Green’s sunrise and sunset times for tomorrow:

Sunrise: 5:27 A.M.  Sunset: 8:09 P.M.

This means that we will see 14 hours 42 minutes of daylight on our longest day of the year. After tomorrow, we will slowly start losing daylight once again. In the Arctic Circle, locations will actually see 24 hours of daylight tomorrow. Check out the climate observations for Barrow, Alaska:
