Friday Afternoon Update

Real-time radar:

This Afternoon– Scattered  T-storms– High 91º / Tonight – Mostly Cloudy; Iso’d Thunderstorms  – Low 71º

3pm 90˚ – 6pm 81˚ – 9pm 78˚ – 12am 75˚ – 3am 73˚ – 6am 70˚

Good afternoon, currently it is another hot and muggy afternoon across the area with partly cloudy skies as an area of cumulus clouds has popped up across most of the state.  Our main area of focus this afternoon is the broken line of thunderstorms to our west that you can see on the radar above.

These storms have been holding together pretty well and if they continue moving ENE they should impact our area within the hour. We will also have to watch out for any other storms that pop up due to daytime heating. These storms are not severe but will produce torrential rainfall and lots of thunder and lightning. Current precipitable water values are nearing 2 inches in southern Kentucky which means that any storms that impact us today will have very heavy rainfall rates.

An area of low pressure to our north currently has a weak cold front associated with it that will dive southeast across the state this evening and early tomorrow. This boundary moving over our warm and juicy air mass is the forcing for the storms we are currently seeing so they are holding together a bit  better today.

After the line of storms to our west passes us we could see a few more isolated storms this evening, but activity should diminish as we head into tonight. There should be a good crowd at the Florida-Georgia Line concert tonight and here is your forecast:

Saturday 6/21 –Partly Sunny, Isolated T’storms Early – High 88º / Saturday Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 68º

Tomorrow the cold front will struggle to push across southern Kentucky and should stall just to our south. This means we will have to deal some more isolated storms in the morning. The good news is that by tomorrow afternoon we should see the clouds start to break up and the precipitation end.

In the wake of the cold front we will see some winds from the northwest which will cool temperatures off by a few degrees and make it a little less humid. Regardless, it will still be another hot summer day which is very appropriate for the official first day of summer. Tomorrow afternoon will be a good time to get  out and enjoy some summertime fun.

Sunday 6/22 –Partly Cloudy, Stray T’storm Possible – High 90º / Sunday Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 70º

On Sunday we will start to see more moisture  return to the area with temperatures reaching 90 degrees once again. Models are still in a bit of disagreement at this point as far as precipitation goes. The GFS likes the idea of weak upper level ridging keeping us dry while the NAM wants to send a shortwave through the area sparking isolated thunderstorms.

For now, we will keep a stray thunderstorm in the forecast for Sunday but don’t be surprised if we end up having a dry day. Lows on Sunday night will dip down to around 70 degrees.

Another area of low pressure to our west will move in to the area to start off next week and it looks like we have more rain chances ahead of us, especially on Tuesday.

That’s all I’ve got for this afternoon. Enjoy the rest of your Friday and the start of the weekend. For real-time weather updates be sure to follow @WxOrNotBG and @WarrenCountyWX on Twitter.
