Happy Pi Day

Today 3/14 Mostly Cloudy & Windy – High 63˚ / Tonight – Increasing Clouds – Low 44˚

3pm 63˚ ~ 6pm 58˚ ~ 9pm 54˚ ~ 12am 50˚ ~ 3am 47˚ ~ 6am 45˚

Pi Day (3/14) is a day commemorating the mathematical constant Pi (3.14..)   Hopefully there was not any confusion and you didn’t end up with a pie in the face like this guy. Pi is a very common mathematical tool and many scientists, including meteorologists, celebrate Pi day with a bit of fun.

Pi Day has been very warm with temperatures in the 60s all across south central Kentucky. Unfortunately, the warm air advection responsible for the warmth is also responsible for today’s howling winds. Winds have been gusting above 30mph across all of the area today and will continue to do so until a weak cold front moves over the area later tonight. A few locations could see some gusts over 40mph.

Clouds have been increasing ahead of the cold front this afternoon and will continue to do so this evening. The cold front looks too dry to produce much precipitation tonight, and temperatures will not drop significantly as lows will only fall into the middle 40s tonight.

Sat – Partly Cloudy – High 63˚ / Sat Night – Rain After Midnight – Low 44˚

On Saturday, a stronger area of low pressure to our southwest will be moving northeast into the Tennessee Valley Saturday night. Skies look to be partly cloudy with increasing cloud cover during the afternoon. Most of the rain should hold off until later Saturday night, but an isolated shower could pop up during the day.

On Saturday night, lows will drop into the middle 40s once again. A swath of moderate rainfall looks to move into Southern Kentucky after midnight. This rainfall will increase in intensity and continue on Sunday.

Sun – Rain Showers Likely – High 48˚ / Sun Night –Scat’d Rain & Snow Showers – Low 31˚

Rain will continue on Sunday, and precipitation coverage should decrease by Sunday evening. With the rain and cloud cover, temperatures will stay in the middle to upper 40s all day. Precipitation amounts look to be anywhere between 0.5″-1″. Here is what the WPC thinks as far as total precipitation through Sunday night:

In addition to the rain, we will see strong winds again on Sunday with easterly winds keeping temperatures cool. As temperatures fall to around freezing overnight on Sunday, snow showers are a possibility with the lingering precipitation but little to no accumulation is expected. Some precipitation could even stick around until Monday morning, so next week could be in jeopardy of staring off wet.

That’s all for this afternoon.  For more frequent updates you can follow @Wx_Or_NotBG and @WarrenCountyWX on Twitter. Enjoy the rest of your Pi Day.
