Warmer & Wetter Weather on Tap

This Afternoon – Mostly Sunny – High 43˚/ Tonight – Mostly Cloudy – Low 29

3pm 42˚~ 6pm 37˚~ 9pm 34˚~ 12am 32˚~ 3am 30˚

It’s official! As of noon today, the Bowling Green airport reached 32 degrees. Usually this is not something to get excited about in Southern Kentucky, but today is the first day we have been above freezing since early Monday morning. Let the “thaw” begin.

The area of high pressure that has been keeping us dry the past few days is shifting east as an area of low pressure to our northwest slowly moves east. Ahead of our next weather-producing system, southwesterly winds are blowing strong over southern Kentucky today. Not only will this make it feel warmer today, but it will also bring in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico into our area.

Fri – Mostly Cloudy – High 44˚/ Fri Night – Scattered rain showers – Low 39˚

The low pressure to our northwest will be in no hurry to move into our area. The low pretty much stalls north of us on Friday which will lead to weather similar to today’s. While there will be less sunshine tomorrow, temperatures will still climb into the lower to middle 40s Friday afternoon.

By late Friday night, rain showers will begin to impact the area as another area of low pressure makes its way northeast from the desert southwest. These showers will be scattered and light in nature. Due to the cloud cover Friday night, low temperatures will actually be relatively warm as they hover around the 40 degree mark.

Sat – Scat’d Rain Showers – High 56˚/ Sat Night – Rain changing to Wintry Mix late – Low 32˚

Saturday will start off warm as temperatures will climb well into the 50s by Saturday afternoon. Rain showers will begin early on Saturday and increase in coverage as the day goes on. By Saturday night, a line of precipitation will be moving east across the state ahead of an approaching cold front.

Saturday could get interesting as the temperature drops near freezing by late Saturday night. The big question will be how fast the cold air can catch up to the back edge of the precipitation. If the cold air is quick to catch up to the precipitation we could see a changeover to sleet sometime late Saturday night and then to snow Sunday morning resulting in some possible light accumulations.

However, most of the time Kentucky sees this kind of setup there isn’t much moisture to work with by the time the temperature drops below freezing. If the cold air moves in after the bulk of the precipitation has already moved through, we could see some light snow showers as the precipitation ends Sunday morning. This would result in little to no snow accumulations.

We will be keeping an eye on Saturday’s weather as the week goes on. Follow  @WarrenCountyWX & @Wx_Or_Not for frequent updates. Enjoy the rest of your Thursday.
