Thursday Afternoon Update

This Afternoon – Clear Skies, COLD – High 15˚/ Tonight – Partly Cloudy – Low

3pm 15˚~ 6pm 13˚~ 9pm 10˚~ 12am 8˚~ 3am 6˚ ~ 6am 3˚

It certainly looks warmer than it feels outside this afternoon. The temperature has risen to 14˚ currently under clear skies, but northwesterly winds are producing wind chill readings near zero. Tonight the temperature will drop down to around 3˚ and it would not surprise me if some rural locations reached the 0˚ mark.

Winter continues to taunt southern Kentucky with brutal cold and no significant snowfalls. January has been a harsh month for us, as a persistent longwave trough has been sitting over the eastern CONUS and keeping temperatures chilly.  On this day a year ago, the high temperature at the Bowling Green airport was 46˚ (31 degrees warmer than today) and two years ago the high temperature was 63˚ (48 degrees warmer than today). In the upcoming week, the cold will continue to keep its grasp on the eastern US.

Fri – Partly Sunny & COLD – High 25˚/ Fri Night – Increasing Clouds, Iso’d Snow Showers – Low 22˚

Friday will be very cold again as the trough remains in place. Winds tomorrow afternoon will keep the wind chill in the single digits.

Cloud cover from an approaching disturbance to our northeast Friday night will keep our low temperature a little bit warmer. A few snow showers could be possible late Friday night as the disturbance moves in. Little to no accumulation expected at this time.

Sat – Cloudy, Sct’d Snow Showers – High 39˚ / Sat Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 23˚

The disturbance to our northeast will allow the high temperature to surpass the freezing mark for the first time since early Tuesday morning. Latest model guidance suggests we will be on the far edge of a precipitation shield moving southeast through the state. Possible snow showers would begin before dawn Saturday morning and continue through the early afternoon.

12Z NAM Accumulated Precipitation from 3AM to 3PM Saturday
12Z NAM Accumulated Precipitation from 3AM to 3PM Saturday

The models are in good agreement for Saturday’s system and the 12Z NAM suggests the precipitation will have a sharp cut off near our area. This would result in little to no snow accumulation for Bowling Green.

We will continue to monitor this weekend disturbance. For frequent weather updates, be sure to follow @Wx_or_Not and @WarrenCountyWX. Have a great evening!
