Inclement Weather Continues

As forecast, plentiful amounts of rain have accompanied brisk, southerly winds of 30+mph today. The National Weather Service felt the need to go ahead and issue the wind advisory at 12pm today, and I completely agree with their call.

Numerous reports of fallen power lines, street signs, street lights and trees have rolled in over the past few hours. I expect these to continue to come in through this evening, as the rain continues to soften up the surface, making trees and other objects vulnerable to the stout winds.

Severe weather is still possible this evening through the early part of tonight (6pm – 11pm).  Should we see any sun (unlikely), our severe risk will be enhanced.  It is worth noting that a “dry slot” has started to take shape to our west.  The clearing will allow sunshine to heat up the surface, which in turn will contribute a higher likelihood of fueling strong convection.  Have a look at visible satellite on the model below (1:15pm) for a better illustration of what I am talking about:

Our main threats with this system will continue to be torrential rainfall and damaging winds.  We still cannot rule out a few isolated tornado spin-ups, especially as the front approaches with more organized storms closer to evening.

Although thunder and lightning may be bleak, the rotation in the atmosphere will be kicking.  Don’t let it deceive you.  I’ll be back when necessary.  Until then, stay in contact with me via Facebook and Twitter for more frequent information.  If you do not have Twitter, follow along with my feed on the right tool bar of the blog.  Stay safe, stay updated, and thanks for reading.
