The Heat and Humidity Are Here to Stay

Hey folks! Hope everyone is doing well on this wonderful Tuesday morning! Yesterday was another scorcher, with highs rising to around 90°F. The real kicker is that dewpoint. It makes everything so much worse than it needs to be. You walk outside and immediately feel as if you are wearing a nice sweater.

Well, the heat doesn’t look to go away this week, so let me jump right into the forecast!

Overall Weather Setup

The basic weather set up that we should see this week is a strong ridge of high pressure moving into the region, and not moving too much. This ridge is currently developing across the central Plains, and will extend its reach into the eastern US by late week.

Underneath this, there will be seasonally high temperatures…and not too much else. The high won’t be centered directly over us for the entirety of the week, but Thursday and Friday in particular shouldn’t see much go on.

High pressure systems force downward motion, which is one reason why temperatures end up warmer. This also helps to inhibit thunderstorm potential. If you want storms, go to Chicago or northern Indiana. The northern US is gonna have plenty of opportunities to see rainfall as they’ll be on the northern fringe of this ridge.

Locally, temperatures will rise up into the low and mid 90s the rest of this workweek, and dewpoints look to remain in the upper 60s and lower 70s during the peak of daytime heating.

This is where things will likely get a bit dangerous. Heat indices will likely jump into the lower 100s during the afternoon, making outdoor activities dangerous.

Forecast Summary

Today: Partly cloudy, with highs around 91°F. Overnight, anticipate mostly clear skies, with lows around 69°F.

Tomorrow: Partly cloudy, with highs around 92°F. Overnight, look for clear skies, with lows around 72°F.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with highs around 94°F. Overnight, look for clear skies and lows around 73°F.

What does this mean for you?

Well, it means that it is going to be hot outside the next four or five days.

That may seem obvious, but I want to reemphasize that. It is looking pretty hot out. Not crazy hot; I don’t think we’re gonna see temperatures approach the upper 90s. But temperatures in the mid 90s, combined with higher dewpoints in the afternoon, will create high heat index values.

So, what should you do?

  • Dress appropriately for the heat. You don’t want to sweat a lot, or more seriously, get caught with some heat exhaustion.
  • If you have to be outside, try to save it for after 5 pm. And: drink plenty of water.
  • Make sure you take breaks to rest from activities outside. Even the evenings will be warm, so keep that in mind with your kids and their sports.
