Discussion
This forecast period is, surprisingly, not all that interesting.
The general synoptic set up features broad northwesterly flow across the eastern US, with multiple shortwave troughs propagating within that flow to create sensible weather conditions. That would be why we have see the weather we have this weekend.
There look to be a couple of shortwaves in this flow that impact us during this timeframe, but neither look to be very significant in terms of surface weather conditions. Today, a sharp shortwave trough looks to propagate southward into the lower Ohio Valley. This trough will have a region of divergence ahead of it, fostering the atmosphere for lift, especially across central and eastern KY.
In addition, it will bring a vorticity maximum, which is just a measure of the spin of air. This is one of the primary features that we look for when looking for lift in the atmosphere, and it definitely looks to be there this afternoon.
This will definitely create precipitation across the region, but the biggest question is what kind. Surface temperatures look to be too warm for it to really be all snow all day, especially here where precip looks lighter. We should see light rain/snow showers most of the day, until it becomes all snow this evening. Snow accumulation will be light. Dusting to 1″ is our range.
Clouds will have thinned by tomorrow morning, allowing for much of Monday to see partly sunny skies, an improvement over the cold and cloudy today. Temperatures should be cool, though, but at least it’ll be relatively sunny in the break we have between systems.
By tomorrow night, clouds and the breeze will be increasing as the next low pressure system propagates eastward to our north. This will have a pretty strong pressure gradient with it, which will cause winds to flow from the southwest, keeping it warmer overnight.
I don’t anticipate any precip from this, as much of its forcing will remain to the north. By Tuesday, the low will be to our northeast, but winds will still be a bit breezy from the southwest or west-southwest. Under partly sunny skies, look for temps to become warmer in the afternoon, maybe even to the mid 50s.
Today’s Key Points
- Light rain and snow showers today
- Snow accumulations will be light
- Nicer on Monday and Tuesday
- Breezy Monday night
- Warmer on Tuesday; highs hit the mid 50s
