Forecast Discussion

A fairly active winter pattern will take place over the next few days. However, this shouldn’t amount to more than a dusting to an inch of snow in most locations. The main concern will be for travel throughout the day on Sunday.

We’re waking up to rather cold conditions this morning. However, that should give way to some warming from the sun in the afternoon hours. Slight southerly surface winds of about 10 mph will shift out of the west this afternoon as a surface trough approaches the area. This surface trough will bring scattered snow showers to the region late tonight, but not before temperatures can top out in the mid 40s!

A shortwave trough will be the culprit for the wintry mischief on Sunday. The trough will dive into the region from the north, spreading widespread divergence across the region. This divergence will cause snow showers to initiate across the region. As the temperature warms, there may be periods of rain and snow, or perhaps a complete changeover to rain. However, a switch back to snow is expected in the evening as the snow exits the region. Highs on Sunday will top out in the mid to upper 30s.

The northerly flow will usher in much colder temperatures to the region. Sunday night and Monday morning lows are expected to be in the low to mid 20s across the region. Snow showers should come to an end overnight. At this point, I suspect a dusting to perhaps an inch of snow is possible in some locations. The snow will come in quick bursts across the region so be sure to be careful on bridges and overpasses.

Upper level ridging will begin to move back into the region on Monday. This will lead to warming conditions to the west of here. However, we’ll likely be stuck right around 40°. Portions of western Kentucky could sneak into the mid 40s!  Southerly flow overnight on Monday night should keep temperatures fairly mild, and in the mid 30s. Sounds like a great day/night to do some parkour. You know, if you’re into that kind of thing.
