Yesterday morning, WKU announced the arrival and launch of White Squirrel Weather. White Squirrel Weather is a real time weather service for WKU, and was developed in house by Dr. Josh Durkee. Dr. Durkee has had this vision for a while, but the creation of White Squirrel Weather offers a face for the Meteorology program at WKU, something it has needed for a long time. As Dr. Durkee points out in the press release yesterday, “…we forget that WKU is really its own city, with a unique population, schools…Now in 2016, this has become the root of White Squirrel Weather.”

Operationally, the program changes things for the WKU Meteorology program. Where there were three entities that worked separately, those three will now be working in collaboration under the White Squirrel Weather header. The plans are for this to be run by students, with the information being disseminated by students to the students on Campus. It truly is going to provide a unique experience and look at how the real world works with communications.

As a current student, I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that this will bring me. I am excited to be a student leader in the program during this time, and to be one of the pioneers in getting this thing rolling as a student entity. WxOrNotBG has some plans in the works to collaborate with White Squirrel Weather, as well. All of the writers on here are WKU students, and Landon is a WKU alum. We are all excited to see the impact this will have on WKU and on the BG Community. For more information, check out the official WKU Press release here. Also: go to the actual White Squirrel Weather website, and give them a follow on Twitter (@WKUweather) for mobile weather on WKU’s campus.
