Discussion
Ahh summertime heat, I am not ready for this. I am not a fan of heat, and actually prefer just the opposite.
It is looking fairly hot and humid and potentially stormy over the next few days. Today only looks to be the former. A well discussed ridge is developing across the central and eastern portions of the US, and will be established near us today. This will lead to higher temps, and a return of high dewpoints.
With highs in the mid 90s and dewpoints in the lower 70s, it will feel miserable outside. Be sure to take extra precaution when doing things outdoors, as plenty of fluids will prevent heat related injuries. Overnight tonight, we will likely see partly cloudy skies, with lows in the mid 70s.
Tomorrow looks similar, but with a threat of evening thunderstorms. The models have been backing off the eastward extend of the ridge over the past few days, and have tended to move it westward, placing us within northwesterly to northerly flow for a few days this week, and this looks to start tomorrow afternoon/evening.
This looks to place us into favorable flow for complexes of thunderstorms. The models don’t handle these set ups well very often, but it doesn’t take a lot to spark off thunderstorms within the hot and humid environment dominated by the ridge.
Highs look to end up in the mid 90s, and it will again be very humid, creating another miserable afternoon in the heat. Like today, extra caution needs to be taken if doing any outdoor activities.
Overnight, skies are looking partly cloudy, with isolated storms possible. Lows in the mid 70s.
Tuesday looks more similar to Monday than it does to today. It looks fairly hot and humid, and with our placement with respect to the ridge, we look to be in favorable placement for the possibility of more storms.
With highs in in the lower 90s, we will see a fairly unstable atmosphere form, and this will be favorable for thunderstorms to develop across the region on Tuesday.
Overnight, look for partly cloudy skies, with lows falling into the mid 70s.
Extended Outlook
The dominant feature across the US is likely to continue being the aforementioned ridge, and its placement with respect to the eastern portions of the country. As I mentioned before, the models are tending to move the ridge further west in the US, and the highest heat will be in that region as well. By the end of this coming week, the models are pointing towards the highest heights in the mid levels, which would build the highest heat back into the eastern US. The CPC outlines their 6-10 day outlook.
