Severe Thunderstorm Watch Until 9 PM: 4:50 Update

The SPC has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 pm CDT across all of SoKy and extending up into central Kentucky. This was issued in large part for a strong complex of thunderstorms moving eastward across the region (you can track it above).

It has already been producing wind damage in southern Missouri, and is marching directly into the region. The atmosphere ahead of this is already loaded and ready to go, as instability parameters are high, and the atmosphere is very moisture loaded, especially at the surface.

With thunderstorms forming along and ahead of this, we will be watching for a flooding threat as well. Because of the heavy rainfall over the Fourth of July weekend, we are looking at a good risk for flash flooding across the region. The atmosphere is loaded with moisture, and the storms ahead of the main complex aren’t moving very quickly.

This will set up a risk for the training of intense, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms as the complex progresses towards us, and this leads me to believe that flash flooding is a high risk with this convection. Additionally, like I mentioned before, the thunderstorm complex has had a history of damaging winds, and with an organized cold pool behind it, wind damage is a definite concern as it moved towards us.

So, in summary:

  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 pm CDT
  • Flash Flooding and Damaging Winds primary threat
  • Lightning is likely to be intense in these storms as well

2:30 PM Update

The complex of thunderstorms that is moving eastward towards us has intensified since the post was initially written. Radar is indicating 60-70 mph wind gusts along and just behind much of the initial line of storms.

Reports of trees down has been common across western KY, and with the heavy rainfall last weekend and the ground being saturated, it won’t take much to knock trees down. There has also been a 58 mph wind gust reported across western Kentucky.
