With today being the first day of June, the National Weather Service put out its weather summary for the Month of May! Bowling Green saw some unusual weather during the month, with the only seasonal weather occurring towards the latter portion of the month.
We ended up with temperatures below average and precipitation being above average by nearly 2″, which makes sense considering we had three 1.50″ rainfall events within a week!
The active pattern seen during the first 2/3rds of the month was in response to a fairly meridional jet stream that kept sending systems our way. For some of that time, we were stuck underneath a deeper trough that actually cut off from the main flow.
This kept temps cool, but not for the whole month. However, much of the month was defined by similar events. Through the first 21 days of the month, we only saw 6 days with temperatures greater than 75°F on the KY Mesonet station here in BG. That is crazy, folks.
The latter portion of May has been defined by a stronger ridging pattern, with much warmer and moister air entering the region. The result has been a summer like pattern across the region.
Overall, May was a really good month, as it didn’t really start to get hot until the end of the month, and I consider that largely a success.
