Sunday, 1/31 – Mostly Cloudy – High 65˚ / Tonight – Rain Showers – Low 53˚
Good morning, Bowling Green! What lovely spring-like weather we’ve been experiencing in January! Yesterday, we hit a high of 70˚, which was just 2˚ shy of our record; the climate normal for this time of year is 46˚. These warmer-than-normal temperatures will stick around for the next few days, but not without the presence of some rain.
Strong southerly flow at the surface will bring temperatures back into the mid-60s today; winds gusts as high as 30-35 mph are possible. We won’t be graced with the plentiful sunshine like we were yesterday, but spring-like temperatures will make for another nice day in Bowling Green.
There’s the possibility for a few sprinkles throughout the day, but most of the rain looks to hold off until the overnight hours with the passage of a cold front. Temperatures will remain in the low-50s tonight.
Monday, 2/1 – Rain Showers Likely – High 57˚ / Monday Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low 49˚
The heaviest rain will exit the area Monday morning, but showers will likely linger throughout the day. Temperatures will drop several degrees due to the passage of the cold front, so highs will be in the mid to upper-50s range – making for a mild February Monday!
Rain chances will decrease overnight, keeping us mainly dry in Bowling Green. Temperatures won’t drop too much between the daytime and overnight hours, with lows in the upper-40s.
Tuesday, 2/2 – Thunderstorms Likely, Some Severe – High 69˚ / Tuesday Night – Showers and Storms – Low 45˚
And now the day that is the bane of all meteorologists’ existence: Groundhog Day.
No matter if the groundhog sees his shadow or not, the weather conditions Tuesday will definitely make it feel more like spring and not like six more weeks of winter.
An approaching low pressure system will impact the area Tuesday, bringing the potential of severe weather to the region. The leading warm front will cause a southerly wind shift Tuesday morning, with temperatures back into the upper-60s by the afternoon.
A deepening trough out west will put us in the right position for divergence aloft, which supplies lift necessary for severe weather. We still need a few more “ingredients”, however, to create severe weather: temperature, moisture, and instability.
Thanks to the warm front and associated southerly flow, temperatures will be unseasonably warm on Tuesday with plentiful moisture to work with from the Gulf. Instability values, however, are not looking very impressive over Bowling Green. This could cause the greater severe risk to shift southward.
Damaging winds associated with the squall line still look probable from Tuesday evening into the overnight hours. We will continue to monitor this system and keep you updated on the latest details in the upcoming blog posts.
