Hot And Stormy Weather Today

Real-time radar:

Today: Partly cloudy, scattered storms. Some storms may be severe. High of 95ºF. Tonight: Cooler. Partly cloudy, with a low of 70ºF.

One thing about the past few days: it has been hot and stormy. Even Saturday, which started off cloudy and rainy, ended up being fairly warm out. To say that the weather has been boring is an understatement. However, Sunday gave us a little dose of severe weather, making things more interesting for us meteorologists.

Well, today, there is another threat. There will be an extended cold front sagging south from Canada, and this will set us up for the potential of scattered severe storms this afternoon and evening. Temperatures will be moving up into the low to mid 90s, and dewpoints will be approaching 80ºF across the region as we get into midday/early afternoon:

This will provide plenty of juice to work with, and will create a very unstable atmosphere. The atmosphere is rarely this unstable, so the storms are expected to be fairly strong across the region, should they fire.

Because of this, the Storm Prediction Center has outlined us in a Slight Risk for severe weather today.

Threats with any storm that is able to get going will be damaging winds and large hail. Another main concern will be…you guessed it, frog stranglin’ rain. There looks to be modest wind shear across the region, and although not likely, a brief tornado spin-up cannot be ruled out.

This setup looks very similar to what we experienced Sunday. We have a moisture packed airmass in place with ample energy to work with.  The approaching cold front and remnant outflow boundaries will serve as firing mechanisms to get the storms going.

Other than that, today looks okay for a fishing trip or a day by the pool (I’m gonna go fishing). Overnight, we should see lower dewpoints (!!!!!) and cooler temps, falling into the upper 6os and lower 70s.

Wednesday: Hot, and an isolated storm. High of 89ºF. Wed. night: Mostly clear. Low of 69ºF.

Well, Wednesday looks a little bit cooler than we’ve had. I mean, upper 80s are acceptable right???

Maybe I am going crazy. Maybe we all are. All I know is that it has been way too hot. We are essentially gonna be on the eastern side of a heat bubble. The ridge of high pressure that has been giving us so much heat the past week will relent for even only a day. This will allow temps to cool into the upper 80s across the region.

I am almost worried that this is a sure sign of a global ice age coming on.

When you’re on the eastern side of ridge’s like this, you get set up on northwesterly flow, and on the northern side of a temperature/moisture boundary. This can often lead to thunderstorms forming and moving southeastward. Watch for that throughout the day, but I don’t see it being a big threat.

Overnight, look for temps to fall into the upper 60s under mostly clear skies.

Thursday: HOT. Mostly sunny, with a high of 94ºF. Thur. night: Warm and partly cloudy. Low of 75ºF.

Well, the ridge takes its toll on our weather….again. It is gonna be really, really hot outside. Probably the hottest day of the week.

Look for temps to get up into the mid and possibly upper 90s, with heat indices rising into the lower 100s. Make sure to stay hydrated and cool when outside, as heat exhaustion can set in pretty quickly.

Overnight, look for temps to only fall a little bit. Temps will fall into the mid 70s, and watch for an isolated storm. Summertime storms are often unpredictable, and with this scenario, I don’t see it being a big issue, but stay alert for it.

Well that is all I have for today’s forecast. Have a good one, and stay cool! Check out @WxOrNotBG, @WarrenCountyWx and @wkuCHAOS for more real time info.
