Cold Sticking Around

Tonight – Cloudy & Quiet – Low 12˚

6pm 21˚ – 9pm 19˚ – 12am 17˚ – 3am 15˚ – 6am 12˚

An Arctic high will continue to influence the region over the upcoming hours, before moving off to our east late tonight.  This will keep partly cloudy skies in the forecast, along with frigid temperatures, which will eventually bottom out around 12˚.

Tuesday 2/24 – Partly Cloudy – High 37º / Tuesday Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low 22º

trough in the jet stream is what has kept the consistent cold in the forecast for the better part of an eternity.  That may or may not be an exaggeration.

This trough is located over the eastern tier of the CONUS (Continental United States), with a ridge over the west.  A few disturbances will rotate through the trough this week, meaning persistent shots of cold air will keep temperatures below normal for south central Kentucky.

Our Tuesday will be rather nice, thanks to southerly flow taking shape across the region.

EEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!!!

This flow will ally with a mix of sun and clouds to send temps climbing to the upper 30s Tuesday afternoon.  This means much of the remaining snowpack should melt away.

Another cold front will slide through the area Tuesday night.  I believe a few isolated snow showers could develop along this front, however, I’m confident they will stay north of the area.  That doesn’t mean cold air won’t move in behind the front… lows will drop into the upper teens.

Wednesday 2/25 – Partly Cloudy – High 40º / Wednesday Night – Scat’d Flurries – Low 15º

Expect Wednesday’s weather conditions to be nearly identical to what we experience on Tuesday’s, the outlier being we’ll be a few degrees warmer.  Another disturbance will move through the trough in the jet stream Wednesday evening, bringing….you guessed it, another shot of cold air.

An upper disturbance looks to transverse across the region on Thursday, when high temps will struggle to make it out of the low 30s.  With enough available moisture in the area, we could see light snow showers develop across southern Kentucky.

There’s really no need to panic…yet.  But seriously, don’t panic.

Nothing is said to be ‘set in stone,’ but it looks like we could see a light dusting out of this, if anything.  The rest of the week looks cold
