Saturday Morning Bowling Green Weather

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

**Areal Flood Watch from 6am Saturday through 12am Sunday for Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Simpson & Warren County**

Today 2/21 – Heavy Rain – High 36º / Tonight – Chance of Wintry Mix; Precip Ending – Low 28º

It has been one hectic/crazy/exciting/(insert adjective here) week for south central Kentucky weather, and there’s still more to come. Temperatures have finally clawed their way above the freezing threshold, which has resulted in slightly improving travel conditions across the region.  With that being said, law enforcement is now reporting ponding and flooding on several roadways due to the heavy rain.

Another concern we’ll have is the potential for this rain to compact snowpacks atop structures and buildings. The stress of the weight could cause buildings to collapse if the snow & ice is not removed in time.

It will be a very soggy, nasty Saturday for those of us here in south central Kentucky, with moderate to heavy rain looking to dominate the start of the weekend. Southerly winds at the surface have allowed warmer air (relatively speaking) to move into the area this morning, causing precipitation to transition to all rain.

Temperatures will remain in the mid to upper-30s, so this will definitely be a cold and heavy rain, with 1-3″ of rainfall possible. Heavy rain falling on top of the accumulated ice & snow already present at the surface could cause problems with water runoff, leading to minor flooding across the area.  Keep in mind the entire area will be under an Areal Flood Watch until midnight tonight.

Another shot of colder air our of the northwest will enter the region tonight, with temperatures expected to fall into the upper-20s. If the colder temperatures from the northwest are able to catch up with the precipitation moving off to the east, some additional snow accumulation is possible. This transition to frozen precipitation will begin after midnight – once temperatures cool back down below the freezing point.

Sunday 2/22 – Chance of Snow Early – High 34º / Sunday Night – Cloudy and Cold – Low 18º

Colder air from the northwest will continue to move through the area Sunday morning, as precipitation moves off to the east. Sunday will be fairly boring weather-wise in comparison to what we’ve experienced this past week, as temperatures flirt with the freezing mark under cloudy skies. Winds from the north will keep the cold air moving into our region overnight Sunday, with lows in the upper-teens expected.

Monday 2/23 – Partly Sunny – High 22º / Monday Night – Partly Cloudy & Cold – Low 10º

The cold temperatures will be here to stay for the start of the workweek, as a Canadian high pressure system continues to move into the region Monday. We will see the coldest temperatures of the current forecast period on Monday, with highs struggling to make it out of the low 20s. Currently, temperatures Monday night look to drop to around 10° under partly cloudy skies.
