Midday Snow Update

A few scattered snow showers have started falling across portions of the region, however, temperatures are currently well above freezing (40˚ at 11am).  This has not allowed anything to accumulate on the ground.  The radar screenshot below is valid for 11am, and showcases the swath of wintry precip we’re keeping an eye on:

We’re in for drastic changes over the upcoming hours, as an Arctic front dives southeast across the area.  Winds will soon be turning out of the northwest, intensifying up to 30-40 mph…

Along with the stout winds, scattered snow bursts will remain a possibility through mid afternoon.  Little to no accumulation is anticipated.  For those who do see these bursts, a quick dusting to ~1/2″ can’t be ruled out.  Here’s the latest thoughts from NWS Louisville:

The following HRRR simulated radar model loops every hour from 11am to 4pm this afternoon.  It will give you a better idea of how this system may behave:

With temperatures quickly plummeting and winds amping up, reduced visibility and slick spots will be possible as the hands on the clock make it past noon.  Please exercise caution if you plan on traveling during this time.

It’s worth noting that this morning’s data has trended northward with the system that’s expected to impact the region Sunday night into Monday.  This gives us a healthier shot at accumulating snow, however, details still need to be ironed out before we make any official calls on amounts.

As of this moment, amounts of one to two inches or more look very plausible.  Heavy narrow banding could lead to difficult forecasting.  We’re talking bands as narrow as 10-50 miles wide seeing the heaviest rates.  We’ll continue to analyze the latest models and update as necessary.  I expect the track will shift even more with the new data slated to come in.

That’s all for the midday update.  As always, stay connected to @WxOrNotBG for the latest real-time weather info.  With deteriorating weather conditions in mind, please travel carefully.  Stay safe!
