Frigid Bowling Green Weather

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Today 1/7 – AM snow showers; Blustery – High 24º↓ / Tonight – Mostly Clear; COLD – Low

Good morning, and happy Wednesday! The bitter cold that has been the weather talk recently has unfortunately arrived, and will continue to filter in, bringing frigid temperatures to our region, as well as many other areas across the United States.

Today, our high temperatures will be met early this morning, as a few  lingering snow showers pester the region. That means the current air temperature outside while you’re reading this post is the warmest it will be for the remainder of the day.

With temperatures so cold, any snowflakes that fall will stick. We’re not expecting much of anything in the way of accumulation (perhaps a solid dusting), however, a few slick spots on the morning commute will be possible. Please take note.

Cold, arctic air will be diving deep into the country due to a large, Arctic high pressure center moving in from Canada (see model above). This will cause temperatures to plummet as the day progresses; temperatures starting out in the 20s this morning will fall into the single digits by dinner time.

With a tight temperature gradient in place, winds will be blowing in from the northwest up to 20-30 mph, with higher gusts not out of the question. This will cause temperatures to feel even colder, with wind chill values falling below zero. This has prompted the NWS to issue a wind chill advisory for all of south central Kentucky from 8am this morning through 9am Thursday.

Temperatures will continue to fall into the overnight hours, with lows around the 0° mark. Yes, you read that correctly… ZERO degrees. Winds will be decreasing, but clear skies will allow temperatures to plummet, with even colder wind chill values.

We won’t be the only ones dealing with this cold snap.  Check out the low temperature forecast for tonight. The majority of the Continental U.S. will be below freezing:

Take the necessary precautions to stay warm today and refrain from being outside if you can, especially this evening. I suggest snuggling up with your favorite blanket, like this little guy.

Also take note of your water pipes. With temperatures tanking this low, it is essential to open up your cabinet doors and shut off any vents to your crawl space to prevent pipes from bursting.

Thursday, 1/8 – Mostly Sunny; Cold – High 24º / Thursday Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 20º

Thursday will be fairly quiet for those of us here in Bowling Green, as high pressure begins to move off to our east and the next system works its way towards our area.

High pressure will allow skies to be mostly sunny for the day Thursday, with winds becoming south ahead of the next disturbance; these winds will help moderate temperatures for the overnight hours.

This temperature forecast is quite tricky, as temperatures will be on the rise for much of Thursday afternoon and evening, with our high occurring right before midnight. Only a few degrees will separate Thursday’s high from Thursday night’s low.

Friday 1/9 – Mostly Sunny – High 28º / Friday Night – Clear and Cold – Low

A cold front will be sweeping through the area Friday morning, allowing winds to once more arrive from the northwest. This will offer another taste of cold air, with temperatures falling a few degrees short of 30°. While this will seem somewhat “warm” in comparison to the last few days (and especially Wednesday), the average high for this time of year in Bowling Green is 45°, according to the National Weather Service. Just some perspective.

Skies look to become mostly sunny for Friday, with clear skies Friday night. Lack of sky cover, in conjunction with the passing cold front, will permit temperatures to drop just above 10° for the low Friday night.

Another shot of wintry precipitation is possible late this weekend into early next week; we’ll have more details on that system in the days to come.
