So far today we’ve be under the influence of a surface low to our west, which is currently cutting a path east across the area. An associated cold front is currently slicing west to east across the Commonwealth.

Once this arctic front pushes south of us overnight into tomorrow, we won’t see temps climb until Thursday. Oddly enough, yes, that means tonight’s low will be Wednesday’s high!

As for this afternoon, highs will top out in the mid to upper 30s across the area, thanks to southwesterly flow ahead of the surface low. Once the front comes through, there is no going back.  Prepare accordingly for a major Arctic blast.

Temps will begin to fall like a rock through the area late this afternoon, eventually bottoming out in the low 20s early Wednesday morning.

Some models have hinted at the potential for isolated snow showers late tonight/early Wednesday. Although the precipitation field looks sparse and light with this disturbance, temperatures will be well below freezing, allowing anything that falls to stick.

The following 4km NAM model below loops every hour from 11pm – 5am tonight.  It shows very light snow tracking southeast over the area:

Accumulation wise, we’ll be looking at minimal amounts, if anything at all.  Perhaps a solid dusting if you’re lucky.  The Wednesday morning commute may be impacted by slick spots as a result.  Please travel cautiously.

Wed 1/7: Clouds clearing;breezy & COLD; high of 22ºf↓; Winds increasing out of the north / Wed night: Mostly clear & windy; FRIGID; low of 3ºf

Early Wednesday, we’ll be seeing a mix of clouds and sun as what is left of the moisture along the front scatters out of the region. The cloudiness overnight tonight will likely help lows from dropping too ridiculously low by Wednesday morning.

Because the air will be so cold, it wouldn’t surprise me to see some isolated flurries left over from the overnight, as snow ratios increase. Most of that should be out of here by evening, and thats when the fun begins. Temps will be plummeting throughout the day, and into the overnight as well.

The 4km NAM temperature model below is valid for 6pm Wednesday, and thinks temp readings will be hovering just above single digits at that time:

There will be another issue to deal with besides the plummeting temperatures. The pressure gradient between the exiting low pressure off to our east and strong high pressure entering the Ohio valley will lead to beleaguering winds of 20-30mph howling out of the northwest. This will create absolutely cutting wind chill values….we’re talkin’ subzero readings by tomorrow evening, folks!

Thu. 1/8: Partly sunny; high of 26ºf / Thu night: Mostly cloudy; low of 22ºf

What’s weird about Thursday is that we’ll be kinda in between systems, and will be seeing a bit of return flow from the south and southwest ahead of a clipper moving across southern Canada. This will likely influence us by creating more in the way of cloudiness during the day and raising temps into the evening.

The degree with which we rise before we hit midnight Friday is in question, as the models aren’t quite sure how fast to move the high pressure out. However, I have learned to never doubt southwesterly flow and it looks like we may get into that before Friday is officially hear. Thus, temps look to end up in the mid and upper 20s.

That is all I have for this post. If you want some hope, the weekend looks like its gonna end up being a bit warmer! Hope you stay warm, and make sure to follow @WarrenCountyWX and @WxOrNotBG for your latest weather information.
