Severe Weather Possible For Bowling Green

We kick off the week on an unsettled note. We’re currently watching a low pressure system and its associated cold front just to our west. This feature is expected to slide through the region this afternoon/evening providing a focal point for more thunderstorm development.

With strong upper level support, decent instability, and moderate wind shear values, scattered storms are expected to ramp up this afternoon/evening as activity will be on the strong, even severe side. The latest Storm Prediction Center (SPC) outlook puts much of the Commonwealth under a slight (think enhanced) risk for severe storms.

These storms today may contain torrential rainfall, damaging winds, dangerous lightning, and large hail (up to quarter-size). The threat for an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out with today’s set up. SPC gives southern Kentucky a 15% probability of damaging winds within 25 miles of a given point.

Activity will likely decrease later tonight with a bulk of precipitation working across eastern Kentucky. However, we’ll keep the chance for some scattered showers and storms through the overnight period with cool lows in the mid 50’s.

After a stormy Monday, we’ll see another disturbance approach the region keeping scattered showers and storms in the forecast. However, after looking over some model data, it seems that decent wind shear and instability parameters could be in place to support a few strong/severe storms through tomorrow afternoon.

The SPC Day 2 probabilistic outlook gives all of southern Kentucky (including Bowling Green) a 5% probability of severe weather within 25 miles of a given point.

Any storms that develop during this period may contain locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning. Despite seeing cloudy skies, highs will manage to climb into the lower 70’s. A few lingering showers will remain possible through tomorrow evening before activity comes to an end late. Lows will be cool as temperatures drop into the mid 50’s.

We’ll usher in mid-week on a quiet note. Surface high pressure will build in from the northern Central Plains keeping Bowling Green weather nice and dry for the short-term. Plenty of sunshine will will win out as highs warm near seasonable conditions.

Unfortunately, the nice weather will be short-lived as our next rainmaker works towards the region. A few showers will be possible late Wednesday night while lows cool off into the mid 50’s. Moisture will increase through late week as soggy conditions will likely prevail. Nonetheless, keep those umbrellas handy.
