Severe Weather Possible Today

Real Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

Today 10/6 – Scattered Strong/Severe Thunderstorms – High 72° / Tonight – Scattered Thunderstorms – Low 54°

An area of low pressure to the north of the region will have a cold front draped off to the west of the region. This places us int the warm sector of the low pressure system. Warm, moist air has been advecting into the region during the overnight hours. This is the reason for the overnight thunderstorms we experienced. This will also be the focus of severe weather potential today.

A strong upper level trough will continue to swing into the region today. This will allow for strung upper level dynamics to take shape over the region. This will create abundant lift over the Bowling Green area. Thunderstorms will likely fire in the mid to late morning hours. Given steep lapse rates, these storms may contain small hail and damaging wind. The amount of thunderstorms during the morning hours will greatly influence afternoon severe weather chances.

In the event that only isolated thunderstorms develop during the morning hours, and the sun pops out from time to time in Bowling Green, then more robust storms may form along a boundary of instability and shear. These will track to the southeast with time. These storms may contain heavy rain, vivid lightning, strong winds, small hail, and even a few tornadoes. As of now, the Storm Prediction Center has placed Bowling Green in a slight (think enhanced) risk for severe weather.

Tuesday 10/7 – Isolated Strong Thunderstorms – High 76° / Tue Night – Isolated Thunderstorms – Low 54°

On Tuesday a secondary area of low pressure will form to the southwest of the region. This will advance a warm front through the region. Thus, we will once again be included in the warm sector of the low pressure system. Thunderstorms will once again be forecast across the region. Given ample instability and shear, a few strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible across the area. The Storm Prediction Center believes isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible as well.
